For current affairs questions, judges are not testing whether you can recite news. They are checking whether you can think clearly, stay balanced, and connect an issue to a practical, human solution.
Use the PREP Structure
Use PREP for most current affairs answers:
- P – Point: State your main view in one clear sentence.
- R – Reason: Explain why you hold this view.
- E – Example: Add a short example, fact, or personal connection.
- P – Point: Close by restating your view or offering a solution.pageanticon

Question: What is the biggest challenge facing young people today?
Answer:
“I believe the biggest challenge is mental health pressure created by constant comparison on social media. When young people measure their worth through likes and visibility, they can lose confidence in their own journey. As a teacher, I have seen how important it is to build digital resilience and remind young people that their value is not defined by online validation. We need more conversations around self-worth, both at home and in schools.”
A Simple 4-Step Formula
For a more detailed answer, use this structure:
- Acknowledge the issue: “This is an important issue because…”
- Give your view: “I believe the core concern is…”
- Add one example or fact: “For instance…”
- Offer a way forward: “As a titleholder, I would focus on…
This keeps your answer organised and prevents you from rambling.
Handle Sensitive Topics Carefully
For controversial topics, avoid extreme statements or blaming one side. Acknowledge the complexity, share a balanced opinion, and focus on empathy, dignity, and practical solutions.ec-undp-electoralassistance+1

Question: Should social media be regulated?
Answer:
“Social media is a powerful tool for connection and awareness, but it also needs responsible safeguards. I believe the focus should be on protecting young users, preventing misinformation, and encouraging digital literacy. Regulation should not limit free expression, but it should create safer and more accountable online spaces.”

If You Do Not Know the Topic
Do not pretend to know everything. Pause, stay calm, and answer from your values.
You can say:
“That is an important question. While I may not know every detail of the issue, I believe the key concern is… and the solution should focus on…”
Judges value composure, honesty, and clear thinking more than memorised facts.ec-undp-electoralassistance+1
